Is it “smoke” or “vapor”?
Many people refer to what a vape exhales as “secondhand smoke” — but technically, that’s not quite right. Traditional cigarettes produce smoke through combustion, releasing thousands of toxic compounds including carbon monoxide and tar.
Vape work differently: they heat e-liquid to create an aerosol without any burning, so the chemistry of what’s exhaled is fundamentally different.Studies show combustion byproducts like tar and carbon monoxide are absent in e-cigarette vapor.
That said, “different” doesn’t mean “harmless.” Research from the CDC indicates exhaled vapor may still contain trace amounts of nicotine, propylene glycol particles, and some volatile organic compounds — so it’s not simply water vapor either.
At a glance
| ✓ No combustion byproducts No tar, carbon monoxide, or the 7,000+ chemicals found in cigarette smoke. | ⚠ Not completely inert May contain trace nicotine and fine aerosol particles that linger briefly. |
| ◷ Dissipates faster Vapor particles are finer and clear from the air much more quickly than smoke. | ↘ Lower bystander exposure Current research shows secondhand exposure risk is significantly lower than with cigarettes. |
What to watch out for when vaping indoors
Even if vapor is less harmful than cigarette smoke, frequent use in poorly ventilated spaces can raise local aerosol concentrations. Here’s what to keep in mind:
✓ Prefer well-ventilated areas. Using near an open window or under an air vent makes a real difference in how quickly vapor disperses.
✕ Avoid vaping in enclosed spaces around children, pregnant women, or people with respiratory conditions — windows-up in a car is a prime example.
✓ Check local rules before using in public indoor spaces. Restaurants, offices, and shopping centers often apply no-smoking policies equally to Vape.
✕ Avoid heavy use in shared bedrooms before sleep, especially if others in the room don’t vape themselves.
✓ Ask first. Even if your device smells pleasant, checking whether those nearby are comfortable takes two seconds and goes a long way.
A quick note on regulations
Rules around where you can vape vary widely by country and even city. In many jurisdictions, Vape are now subject to the same indoor restrictions as traditional tobacco products. Check local regulations on Public Health resource page — especially when travelling internationally.
